If you grew up in the 80’s like I did you remember the iconic shorts that coaches wore. If your coach had a big gut these shorts would at least let him show off his big beefy tan legs if he had them.
This segment I’m calling Coaching Shorts is dedicated to offering creative coaching tips in 500 words or less. I’m passionate about mentoring and I want to offer you what I’ve learned along the way in mentoring others. If you mentor, coach, or disciple someone, or a group of someones, this post is for you.
One of the best things coaches can do for those they coach is learning to ask great questions. Before I sign off on coaching or mentoring someone, I want to learn what I can about them. Before the coffee or meal we share together, I’ll have my questions written out and I’ve listed them below.
- “What is the greatest lesson you’ve learned in life?” By asking this question I seek your wisdom.
- “What are you learning right now?” This question gives me a window into your passions.
- “How has failure shaped your life?” This question gives me insight into your attitude.
- “Do you have any regrets?” Without fail this question invokes the response “Great question!” Surprisingly none of the people I’ve asked have left this one unanswered.
- “Who do you know that I should?” This allows me to engage others in your circle and also shows me whose opinion you value.
- “What books have changed your life,” and “What are you reading now?” These questions help me to see who has already shaped your personal growth.
- “How can I be a blessing to you?” This question allows me to express my gratitude for blessing me with your time and insight. Most of the time people respond to this last question by saying, “You’ve already blessed me by asking me these great questions.”
Sadly, we may never share a meal or a coffee together, but if these questions help you become a better coach we both win. I’d love to hear what you’d ask me if we shared a coffee together!
As a child of the 80s myself, i do remember those coaching shorts! I guess the one question I would add to your excellent list would be who do you draw inspiration from?
