5 questions to ask yourself before your next ‘Drop the Mic’ presentation

Pastor, writer, and communicator aficionado Andy Stanley has five questions that he asks himself while preparing a communication piece. He’s most well known for his weekly teachings as the lead pastor at North Point Community Church in Alpharetta Georgia, but he is also extremely well known for his conference speaking, books and leadership podcast.

It would be safe to say that he is the “Andy Stanley” of communication, without being redundant. His name is synonymous, in Christian circles, with the likes of Billy Graham and Bono.

Here are the five questions.

  1. What do they need to know?
  2. Why do they need to know it?
  3. What do they need to do?
  4. Why do they need to do it?
  5. How can I help them remember?

He’s famous for his one point messages. He believes that most people cannot walk away with more than one thing from any message so he pours every stat, story, illustration, Bible passage, and anecdote into making that one point the most memorable thing.

Now go drop that mic!

Then pick it up and apologize to the technician.

  1. Love these five questions. As an industrial training manager for 30 years, those five pretty much sum up everything I ever taught, including how to develop training programs. It should be true for any presentation. This was great.
