“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,” – Ephesians 5:18
Many well meaning Christians ask God for a filling of the Spirit when what they really want is a feeling of the Spirit.
There are many different reasons people desire a filling: evidence of God in their lives, power for holy living, courage, a deeper love relationship with God and others, etc. I can’t speak for anyone else except for myself, but I have been guilty of asking God for a filling of the Spirit when what I really wanted was to feel something. Jesus is the X-factor in the filling of the Spirit. You can’t have one without the other.
Jesus is in believers and the Holy Spirit is in Jesus-in fullness! Just because we have Jesus doesn’t mean we have FULLNESS of Spirit. The way to be filled with the Spirit is to be filled with Jesus.
We must be willing to drink the water of obedience in Jesus before we experience the wine of excess in the Holy Spirit. Being filled DOES bring feeling with it but we can’t put the cart before the horse, or the heart before the course.
The good news is that the Father WANTS you to be filled and will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask but you can’t have Him in fullness without obedience (Luke 11:13). Get busy abiding in the vine and your filling is on its way (John 15:1-15).
