[…After being taken captive by Babylon until Persia came to power…] The land enjoyed its sabbath rests; all the time of its desolation it rested, until the seventy years were completed in fulfillment of the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah (2 Chron 36:[20]-21, NIV).
The land, not the people, enjoyed a holy Sabbath during the Babylonian captivity.
That is 70 years worth of Sundays, mind you.
The evil done by Israel vexed God to the point of the worst thing His children can experience–natural consequence. This shows a couple of things:
1.God is not above or below using anything to get our attention.
2. When hope is lost in getting one’s attention, God tends to the part of His creation not made in His image and likeness.
Love it. I wrote something paralleling this punishment of the Israelites and how God disciplines us. I was reminded that our sin has been removed as if from east to west, but “getting our attention? ” That I don’t think can be denied. Thanks for a great post.
